Hail Damage Roof Repair in the Flathead Valley

Hail damage roof repair in the Flathead Valley is mostly a documentation problem before it is a repair problem. Hail bruises shingles in ways you cannot see from the ground, and summer hail moves through the valley most years. Before you talk to an insurer or sign anything from a door knocker, get the damage on record. We fly a drone survey over every slope, photograph each strike, and give you the full photo set, so whatever you decide next starts from evidence.

What hail does to an asphalt roof

A hail strike knocks the protective granules off the shingle and bruises the fiberglass mat underneath. The bruise is the real damage. The mat cracks, the exposed asphalt bakes in the sun, and over the following seasons the strike point becomes a soft spot that lets water through. From the ground, a hail-hit roof often looks fine. Up close, the strikes show as dark circles where granules are gone, sometimes with a fracture you can feel more easily than see. Hail also dents soft metals like vents, flashing, and gutters, which is often the first clue a roof took real hits.

  • Granule loss exposing the asphalt layer to UV breakdown
  • Bruised or fractured fiberglass mat beneath the surface
  • Dented vents, flashing, skylights, and gutters
  • Cracked or chipped ridge caps
  • Damage concentrated on the slopes facing the storm's path

Documentation before anyone else touches it

Hailstorms bring out-of-state crews to the valley within days, and their inspections tend to find whatever pays them. Our approach is different because our shop is in Kila and we will still be here next year. The drone survey photographs every slope at close range, we mark each strike on the imagery, and the photo set is yours regardless of what you do with it. If the hits are cosmetic, we say so. If the damage justifies an insurance claim, you already hold dated proof of every strike and every affected slope, gathered before anyone walked the roof or altered the evidence.

Repairing with shingles built for hail

Repairing hail damage with the same class of shingle invites the same result next summer. As a Malarkey Certified Installer, we can repair or replace with Malarkey polymer-modified asphalt shingles, which stay flexible in cold weather and absorb impact instead of fracturing. Malarkey's line includes UL 2218 Class 4 options, the highest impact rating the standard offers, including the Vista shingle we installed on the Bigfork project Malarkey featured in its Contractor Corner. For a valley that sees regular summer hail and hard winters, that is the sensible direction when a roof needs more than a patch.

Hail Damage Repair: questions we actually get

How can I tell if hail actually damaged my roof?

Check the soft metal first. Dents in gutters, downspouts, and roof vents mean the hail was hard enough to matter. On the shingles themselves, damage shows as dark spots where granules are missing, often with a bruise underneath. A drone survey finds and photographs every strike without anyone walking the roof.

Is hail damage always worth an insurance claim?

No. Light hail can scuff granules without bruising the mat, and a claim for cosmetic damage may not serve you well. We document first, then tell you plainly whether the damage threatens the roof. When it does, you already have the photo evidence organized and dated for the conversation with your insurer.

What are Class 4 impact-rated shingles?

Class 4 is the highest rating under UL 2218, an impact test that drops two-inch steel balls on the shingle from twenty feet. Shingles that pass without cracking earn the rating. Malarkey builds Class 4 options using polymer-modified asphalt, which flexes under impact instead of shattering, a real advantage in cold weather.

A storm-chaser crew knocked on my door after the hail. What should I do?

Do not sign anything on the spot, especially an assignment of benefits or a contingency agreement. Get the damage independently documented first. Our drone survey gives you your own photo record and written scope, so any contractor's claims about your roof can be checked against evidence you control.
